  • Yoshiwara, Kawasaki, Nishikawaguchi, Omiya — How Japan’s Soapland Districts Differ

Japan's soaplands are not spread evenly. They cluster into a small number of districts, each with its own history, scale and feel. This article covers the four main districts in the Tokyo area, and — more usefully for a visitor — where you can realistically go.

First: where can you actually go?

Most soaplands do not accept customers who are not Japanese, and that changes the answer to "which district should I choose" completely.

Yoshiwara has by far the most shops that accept international customers — more than the other three districts in this article combined. If you are visiting Japan for a short time, that is the practical answer, and the rest of this article is context rather than a decision.

    The current list is here:

If your trip does not include Tokyo, see outside Tokyo below.

    Outside Tokyo

Tokyo has the most, but it is not the only option. Roughly in order of how many shops accept international customers:

    CityDistrictNotes
FukuokaNakasu (中洲)The strongest option outside the Tokyo area. Central, walkable, and a well-known nightlife district
KobeFukuhara (福原)Equal to Nakasu in numbers. Reachable from Osaka in about half an hour
SapporoSusukino (すすきの)Several. Susukino is Japan's largest nightlife district north of Tokyo
Otsu, ShigaOgoto (雄琴)A few. A hot-spring district on Lake Biwa, about 20 minutes from Kyoto
    Niigata—A couple
Hiroshima, Wakayama, Miyazaki—One or two each

Two things follow from this list.

First, if you are travelling on business or touring outside Tokyo, you are not out of options — but your choice narrows to a handful of shops in a handful of cities, and calling ahead matters even more than it does in Tokyo.

Second, numbers change. Shops start and stop accepting international customers without announcing it. The list is what we have verified most recently; treat this table as the shape of things rather than a count.

    The basics, briefly

A soapland is a private bathhouse The attendant is not an employee of the shop; she is treated as renting the room to assist you with bathing, and what happens between two adults inside is a private matter the shop is not party to.

The price is split into a bathing fee paid at the desk and a service fee handed to the attendant. This is the same in every district. It is explained in full in what a soapland actually costs.

    Yoshiwara (Taito City, Tokyo)

    Scale and access

Yoshiwara began in the Edo period as a licensed pleasure quarter, and it is the oldest such district in Japan. It remains the largest in the Tokyo area, concentrated in Senzoku 3–4 chome in Taito City. The nearest station is Minowa on the Hibiya line, about ten minutes on foot; it is also reachable from Asakusa, which is why some visitors fold it into a day of sightseeing.

    Character

Yoshiwara has a relatively high proportion of upmarket shops, and interiors and facilities are often a selling point. It is also where you will find the most shops used to receiving international customers, and some display signage in other languages. The sheer number of shops means a wide spread of price and atmosphere.

The flip side is that the choice is overwhelming. Narrow it to two or three before you go.

    Kawasaki / Horinouchi (Kawasaki, Kanagawa)

    Scale and access

Horinouchi was designated in the 1960s and has long been considered second in the Kanto region after Yoshiwara. The area was a post town on the old Kawasaki road, so it has carried through traffic for centuries. It is within walking distance of JR Kawasaki station and easy to reach from central Tokyo.

    Character

The shops sit in a compact block, so it is easy to walk around and compare. It has a history as the origin of various services in the trade, and the mix runs from long-established shops to newer ones. Fewer shops than Yoshiwara, but better for anyone who values being close to a station.

Only a small number here accept international customers — check the list before you travel.

    Nishikawaguchi (Kawaguchi, Saitama)

Scale, access, and a history worth knowing

Nishikawaguchi grew quickly around 2000, partly as enforcement tightened elsewhere. It sits around the west exit of Nishikawaguchi station on the JR Keihin-Tohoku line, a direct ride from central Tokyo.

At its peak the district held more than 200 establishments. Between 2004 and 2006 Saitama police conducted a large-scale crackdown, and legally operating shops were consolidated into a specific block. The district today is much smaller than its reputation.

If you arrive expecting the Nishikawaguchi that older websites describe, you will be surprised — and a great deal of that old material is still online. The surrounding neighbourhood has also become known as an area with a large Chinese community, and has a life quite separate from the shops.

    Omiya (Saitama City, Saitama)

    Scale and access

The Omiya district was designated in the Taisho era. Today it is a compact block roughly 100 metres on a side, about 100 metres from the east exit of Omiya station. That station is served by the Shinkansen and several JR and private lines, which is its main advantage.

    Character

The smallest of the four, with the fewest shops. Its appeal is pure access: you can come from a long way off and return the same day. Convenient if you are coming from elsewhere in Saitama or from northern Kanto.

How the four feel, side by side

    DistrictNearest stationScaleAccess
YoshiwaraMinowa, Hibiya line (approx. 10 min walk); also from AsakusaLargest in the Tokyo areaMost shops, widest choice
Kawasaki / HorinouchiJR Kawasaki (walkable)Second in KantoGood from central Tokyo, easy to walk around
NishikawaguchiJR Nishikawaguchi, west exitLegal shops consolidated; much reducedDirect from central Tokyo
OmiyaJR Omiya, east exit (approx. 100 m)Smallest of the fourShinkansen and multiple lines

Scale figures are approximate, drawn from reporting and public records; shop numbers change over time. Prices and who is working vary too much to cover here. For current listings see the area index.

Atmosphere differs as much as size. Yoshiwara has the bustle of an entertainment district, with shops competing on frontage. Horinouchi is a quiet compact block close to housing. Nishikawaguchi has an unusual streetscape shaped by its history. Omiya sits immediately behind a station's commercial area, so it is easy to fold into an ordinary errand — and small enough to see in full in a few minutes.

    Practical points beyond price

Think about how you get home. Districts like Nishikawaguchi and Omiya are so close to their stations that a late finish is not a problem. Yoshiwara and Kawasaki involve a walk, so factor in a taxi.

Opening hours work the same way everywhere: no trading past midnight, but opening from around sunrise is permitted, so early morning slots exist and are often cheaper.

And if you are relying on a station pickup by car, that is arranged when you book — see your first visit.

    Choosing, in one line each

    • Widest choice, and the most shops that accept international customers: Yoshiwara. For most visitors this is the answer
    • Close to central Tokyo, quieter, easy to walk: Kawasaki
    • Shortest walk from a station: Omiya. Good from the Shinkansen
    • Nishikawaguchi: check the current scale first. The gap between reputation and reality is large
    • Not in Tokyo? Nakasu (Fukuoka) and Fukuhara (Kobe) first, then Susukino (Sapporo) and Ogoto (Shiga)
    • Whichever district you pick, confirm the shop accepts you before you travel

    In short

The four districts differ in scale, history, access and feel — but the rules, the pricing structure and the etiquette are identical everywhere.

For a visitor, the district matters less than one question: will this shop accept you on the day? Start from the list, read the pricing article, then pick a district.

  • Your First Visit to a Soapland — What Happens, in Order

The hardest part of a first visit is not knowing what to do, or when. This article walks through the whole thing in order: choosing a shop, booking, arriving, the room, and leaving. Pricing is covered separately; here we deal with the sequence.

Step zero: choose a shop that will accept you

Most soaplands will refuse a customer who is not Japanese, and they will do it at the door.

This is not the same as hostility. Rules and boundaries have to be explained clearly, and staff cannot verify that they have been understood across a language gap. A misunderstanding inside a private room is very hard to resolve.

So the first step is not choosing an area. It is choosing from the shops that have publicly stated they accept international customers:

Yoshiwara in Tokyo has by far the largest number of them. If you are visiting Japan and have one evening, that is the practical answer.

    1. Decide three things

    • Area — see the list above; your options are narrower than a Japanese customer's
    • Time — when you go in and when you come out
    • Course length — usually somewhere between about 60 and 120 minutes

If it is your first time, do not take the shortest course. Sixty minutes includes showering and dressing. It moves faster than you expect.

    2. Booking

Phone booking is the norm. Some shops take online reservations, but the phone is more reliable and tells you availability immediately.

The call will almost certainly be in Japanese. Ask your hotel's front desk or concierge to make it, or a Japanese-speaking friend. This is a routine request; hotel staff in Japan handle it without drama.

    What has to be communicated:

    ItemExample
NameA given name or katakana is fine
    Date and time"Today at 6pm"
    Course length"60 minutes"
    Nomination"Free", or a specific person
That you are not JapaneseConfirm they accept you on that day

That last row is the important one. A shop that appears on a list may still decline on a particular day, depending on who is working. Confirming on the phone saves a wasted trip.

It is also the moment to ask about tattoos. Many bathing facilities in Japan refuse customers with visible tattoos, and a soapland is a bathing facility.

    Nomination

    TypeWhat it means
Free (フリー)You do not choose; the shop assigns
Photo nomination (写真指名)You choose from photographs; a fee applies
Repeat nomination (本指名)You ask for someone you met before; a fee applies

For a first visit, free is normal — and at a shop accepting international customers, the choice may be made for you anyway, since not every attendant will accept a non-Japanese customer.

    Walking in without a booking

Some shops take walk-ins. In practice you will either wait a long time or be turned away, and the odds are worse if you are not Japanese. Evenings and weekends are busiest. Call first.

    3. Getting there

    Station pickup

In areas away from a station, some shops will collect you by car from the nearest station. Arrange it when you book.

    1. Travel to the station
    2. Call the shop when you arrive
    3. Get in the car
    4. Arrive at the shop

This is far more reliable than trying to find the place on foot in an unfamiliar district. If it is offered, use it. The same applies on the way back — they will take you to the station afterwards, and there is normally no charge.

    At the front desk

Aim to arrive five to ten minutes early. Much earlier and there is nowhere to wait; late and your time is cut.

    • Give the name you booked under
    • You pay the bathing fee here

Bring cash in yen. Cards are rarely accepted, and cards issued outside Japan less often still. Many Japanese ATMs will not take a foreign card at all, so withdraw before you set out.

Under-18s cannot enter. You will not always be asked for identification, but bring your passport — you are required to carry it in Japan anyway.

If you are running late, call before you arrive. Silence costs you the time, or the booking.

    4. Waiting and entering

You will be shown to a waiting room, usually with a drink. This waiting time is not part of your course.

When it is your turn, the attendant comes to collect you and takes you to the room. As soon as you are inside, you hand her the service fee.

An envelope used to be customary; most people now simply hand it over. Bring the exact amount — no one expects to make change. No speech is needed.

    5. In the room

It is worth knowing how this is structured before you are standing in it.

A soapland is a private bathhouse. The attendant is not an employee of the shop; she is treated as renting that room to assist you with bathing. What happens between two adults in that room is a private matter the shop is not party to.

In practical terms: nothing is negotiated at the front desk, and nothing is guaranteed in advance. You are two adults in a room, and she decides as much as you do. Pressing for something that has not been offered is the fastest way for a visit to go wrong.

Your time runs from entering to leaving — showering and dressing included. If you want to extend, say so partway through rather than at the end.

    6. Leaving

You paid the bathing fee at the desk and the service fee on entering, so there is usually nothing to settle on the way out.

Some shops will offer a return booking or a membership card. Declining is fine.

If the area is far from a station, they will drive you back. Ask.

    7. Early morning is an option

Soaplands do not trade past midnight, so there is no late-night option. They may open from around sunrise, and early slots are often discounted or offered as shorter courses.

For a first visit where you mainly want to see what it is like, early morning is a sensible choice — and quieter.

    8. Things not to do

    • No photography. Not in the building, not in the room. Keep your phone away
    • Do not negotiate on price. It is fixed, at the desk and in the room
    • Do not arrive drunk. You will be refused
    • Do not ask staff what happens in the room. They cannot answer, and it puts them in a difficult position

    Common worries

What do I bring?Cash, and your passport. Nothing else
Do I need a towel? No. Everything is provided
Can I go alone?Almost everyone does
    What should I wear?Ordinary clothes
Will anyone speak English?Assume not. Accepting international customers does not mean offering English

That last one surprises people. A shop on the list has said it will accept you; it has not promised a common language. Translation apps work, but settle the money beforehand, by phone.

    In short

Book → pay the bathing fee at the desk → wait → hand over the service fee on entering → leave. There is no elaborate etiquette.

The part that actually decides how the evening goes happens before you leave your hotel: calling a shop that accepts international customers, and confirming the total.

    A店B店

  • What a Soapland Actually Costs — Why the Advertised Price Is Not the Total

Almost every first-time visitor is caught out by the same thing. A shop advertises "60 minutes, ¥20,000", and the amount that actually leaves your wallet is larger than that.

The shop is not lying to you. A soapland's price is split in two from the start, and only one half is usually advertised. Once you know how the split works, there are no surprises on the day.

First, a warning that costs more than money

Most soaplands will not accept you if you are not Japanese.

This is the single most expensive thing to get wrong, because you find out at the door, after you have already travelled there. The reasons are practical rather than hostile: rules have to be explained clearly, and staff cannot rely on being understood.

Before you think about price at all, start from the list of shops that have publicly said they accept international customers:

Everything below applies to those shops.

The price is split into two payments

What it pays forWho you pay, and when
Bathing fee (入浴料, *nyūyokuryō*)Use of the private room and its bathing facilitiesThe front desk, when you arrive
Service fee (サービス料, *sābisuryō*)The attendantThe attendant directly, right after you enter the room

    Why it works this way

Japanese law does not permit brothels. A soapland is licensed as a private bathhouse What the shop sells you is the room and the bath.

The woman is not an employee of the shop. She is treated as renting that room to assist you with bathing. That is why her fee goes to her directly and never through the front desk.

What happens between two adults inside that room is treated as a private matter the shop is not party to.

This is not a word game, and it is worth understanding before you arrive. It is the reason the front desk will not discuss what happens in the room, and the reason no one there will answer that question however you phrase it. Asking puts staff in a genuinely difficult position.

The advertised number may be only half of it

Shops differ in which half they print large.

    • Some advertise the total
    • Some advertise only the bathing fee, with the service fee in smaller print
    • Some state clearly that the price is all-inclusive (総額, *sōgaku*, or コミコミ, *komikomi*)

So two shops both showing "¥20,000" may not be comparable at all.

    The same thing in numbers

These figures are an illustration only. Real prices vary by shop, by course, and by time of day.

    Shop AShop B
    Advertised¥20,000¥28,000
    Bathing fee¥20,000¥28,000 (all-inclusive)
    Service fee+¥12,000included
    Nomination fee+¥3,000+¥2,000
    Actually paid¥35,000¥30,000

The shop that looked ¥8,000 cheaper was ¥5,000 more expensive. This is ordinary, not a trick.

The question that solves all of it

    Ask for the total.

*Sōgaku de ikura desu ka* — "What is the total?"

A reputable shop answers plainly. A shop that will not give you a straight number is a shop to skip.

Since you will most likely be calling in Japanese, ask your hotel concierge or a Japanese-speaking friend to make the call. While they are on the phone, it is worth confirming all of this at once:

    • The total for the course you want
    • Whether the nomination fee is included
    • Whether there is a first-visit membership fee
    • Whether the price changes by time of day
    • Whether they accept international customers on that day
    • Whether a reservation is needed
    • Whether tattoos are an issue

That last one matters more than visitors expect. Many bathing facilities in Japan refuse customers with visible tattoos, and soaplands are bathing facilities.

There is no late night — but there are early mornings

Soaplands do not stay open past midnight. They are not permitted to trade across the date boundary, so there is no such thing as a late-night soapland. Looking for one at 2am is wasted effort.

They may open from around sunrise, and many do. Early morning slots are frequently discounted, or offered as shorter courses.

If you want to keep the cost down, the answer is not a late night. It is an early morning.

    Handing over the service fee

You hand it to the attendant right after you enter the room.

An envelope used to be the norm. Most people now simply hand it over, so there is no need to prepare one.

The important part: no one expects to give you change. Find out the amount beforehand and bring the exact sum. Fumbling here is awkward for both of you.

No speech is required. Holding it out is enough. You do not need to ask whether the amount is correct.

    Nomination: three ways

The fee that most often surprises people is the nomination fee.

    What it meansCost
Free (フリー)You do not choose; the shop assignsUsually no fee
Photo nomination (写真指名)You choose from photographsFee applies
Repeat nomination (本指名)You ask for someone you met beforeUsually higher than photo

Choosing "free" is cheaper, but you do not get to choose who comes. For a first visit at a shop that accepts international customers, the choice is narrower than it would be for a Japanese customer anyway.

    Other things that get added

    • Membership fee — charged on a first visit at some shops
    • Extension — if you go past your booked time
    • Special-rate days — certain days or events

Discounts run in the other direction too. The event and discount information we publish daily is exactly this kind of movement. Shifting your visit by a day can genuinely cost less.

    Reservations and cancellations

Many shops take walk-ins, but if you want a particular person, assume a reservation is required. Popular attendants are not available same-day.

Cancellations are the part visitors forget. Some shops charge a cancellation fee for a no-show or a late cancellation. If you cannot make it, call. A no-show can also mean you are not welcome back.

    Bring cash

Most shops are cash only. Cards are not widely accepted, and cards issued outside Japan are accepted even less often. Where a card works, a surcharge may apply.

There is not always an ATM nearby, and many Japanese ATMs will not accept foreign cards at all. Withdraw yen before you go, and bring a little more than the total you were quoted.

    Comparing prices sensibly

Compare totals against totals. Comparing advertised bathing fees will mislead you almost every time — once nomination and membership fees are in, the ranking often reverses.

Note also that the going rate differs sharply by area. Comparing a shop in one district against a shop in another tells you little.

And price does not have to decide it. Facilities, atmosphere and how carefully you are treated vary. Know the total, then choose on the whole picture.

A price far below the going rate has a reason

If something looks dramatically cheap, find out what is not included. It may be the bathing fee alone, a short course, or a limited time slot.

Asking for the total always reveals it. If the answer stays vague, walk away.

    In short

    • The price is split into a bathing fee and a service fee
    • The split exists because of how these businesses are licensed
    • The advertised number is often not the total
    • Ask "sōgaku de ikura desu ka" and the problem disappears
    • Nomination, membership and extension fees are added on top
    • There is no late night. For a cheaper visit, look at early morning
    • Compare total against total
    • Bring the exact amount for the service fee
    • Always call if you need to cancel
    • Bring cash, and more than you think you need

A. いいえ。

    A店B店
